Fabricator, Wig Enthusiast, Puppeteer

Syd Ellis

I am Syd Ellis, an interdisciplinary artist currently working in Chicago, Illinois. Over the past few years, I have fabricated a charred human arm, sculpted a cow brain out of clay, created an articulated, talking mermaid puppet, and dyed my hair blue too many times to count. While doing all of this, I have studied the cinematic and theatrical arts, props mastering, set dressing, designing and styling wigs for musicals and plays, and teaching children improv, moving from discipline to discipline before discovering that I cannot choose just one to create within. We create art in every facet of their lives and I strive to completely fill my life with creativity and artistry. The human experience perplexes me so I create art to express my deepest emotions and explore the most of what life has to offer. By honing a wide variety of skills, every day can be different and I can reach so many lives, hoping to make a positive impact. Since childhood, my passion for art has driven my life, participating in musical theatre, dance, illustration, painting and writing to further grow my creative skills in any way that helped me understand myself. In order to communicate my deeper emotions, I create and share my life through a variety of disciplines that can help people see what I see in the world. Whether it is creating a puppet to emulate an emotion or styling a wig to match the story and life of a character, art is how I best understand emotional communication. A lot of the work I do supplements the work of other creatives and I strive to create an artistic experience that heightens the story that already exists.
